Permitted Development Rights Extended for Rooftop Solar Installations
In a significant policy shift, the government has introduced changes to planning regulations, granting permitted development rights for the installation of rooftop solar panels on homes and businesses. This means that property owners will no longer be required to undergo the comprehensive planning process.
Under the new rules, residences with flat roofs can now freely install solar panels without the need for planning permission, aligning regulations with those applicable to businesses. Additionally, the amendments facilitate the installation of panels in canopies above car parks, provided they are positioned more than 10 meters away from residential properties.
The government anticipates that these changes will incentivize more property owners to adopt solar energy, contributing to reduced energy bills and lower emissions. Notably, restrictions mandating businesses to seek planning permission for solar installations exceeding one megawatt of electricity generation will be abolished.
Emphasizing the importance of adapting homes for a sustainable future, Planning Minister Lee Rowley stated, "By cutting red tape in the planning system, we can ensure homeowners and businesses can install solar panels without being hindered by costly delays. Importantly, these permitted development rights remain subject to crucial conditions, including their application in conservation areas."
Energy Security Minister Graham Stuart added, "Removing the 1MW restriction for industrial rooftop solar will help us achieve our target of 70GW of solar power by 2035, supporting British jobs, strengthening our renewables sector, and reducing consumer bills.
